Our ELA curriculum consists of:
- Reader's Workshop: based off of Lucy Calkins Grade 1 Units; has a daily mini-lesson on a focus strategy, independent reading time while teachers conference with individual children or in small groups, and a time to share with partners or the whole group.
- Writer's Workshop: based off of Lucy Calkins' Grade 1 Units, covering Narrative, Opinion, and Informative topics; same structure as Reader's Workshop--daily mini-lesson, independent writing time, share time
- Weekly Spelling: 5 words a week given from the Fry Sight Word Lists; daily practice at school with test on Fridays in context over 5 new words and 5 review words.
- Phonics Instruction: 3-5 days a week, we will focus on a particular phonics skill in class. Activities will include both phonological y phonemic awareness as we develop an ability to decode words. For the scope and sequence, you may download the file below.
- Sight Word Challenge: Weekly individual assessments on reading sight words (NOT spelling them!). Students will progress through the Fry Sight Word lists as they pass the words. There will be 5 new written in the agenda every week.

Math:
This year, we will continue with the Common Core Aligned 2015 GoMath! program. We saw significant growth in math scores during our first year of implementation and are excited for more. For more information on the Common Core, visit this website: http://www.corestandards.org/Math/. (También disponibles en español.)

Social Studies:
Students will alternate Science and Social Studies units. There will be a total of 4 classes per week. Per the Panamericano Benchmarks (found on the school's Curriculum website), we will study the following themes:
Students also will have Colombian Social Studies 1 time per week with Miss Luisa. You can find the Colombian Social Studies benchmarks on the Curriculum website as well.

- Families and Communities, Now and Long Ago (comparing past to present; timelines; community helpers)
- Government and What It Does (rights and responsibilities of citizens; why we need government)
- The World in Spatial Terms (location of familiar places and map skills)
- Economics (wants and needs; goods and services; producers and consumers)

Science (including STEM time):
Students will have alternate Science and Social Studies units. There will be a total of 4 classes per week, in addition to a back-to-Science Lab period every other week for experiments. We are in the process of implementing the Next Generation Science Standards, which we have also aligned with the science standards from the Colombian Ministry of Education, and will cover the following units:
Characteristics and behavior of living things (Inherited and acquired)
Life Cycles (Metamorphosis)
Energy (Sound and Light)
Solar System (Stars and Planets)
STEM block: New this year is an integrated science lab and technology time. Students have a 1.5 hour block each week, and we will alternate between science lab with Ms. Anita and technology with Mr. Danilo. We will be working closely with these teachers to integrate our units with this block.

Characteristics and behavior of living things (Inherited and acquired)
- 1-LS1-2 -Read texts and use media to determine patterns in behavior of parents and offspring that help offspring survive.
- 1-LS3-1-Make observations to construct an evidence-based account that young plants and animals are like, but not exactly like, their parents.
Life Cycles (Metamorphosis)
- 1-LS1-1- Use materials to design a solution to a human problem by mimicking how plants and/or animals use their external parts to help them survive, grow, and meet their needs.*}
Energy (Sound and Light)
- 1-PS4-1 -Plan and conduct investigations to provide evidence that vibrating materials can make sound and that sound can make materials vibrate.
- 1-PS4-2-Make observations to construct an evidence-based account that objects can be seen only when illuminated.
- 1-PS4-3 -Plan and conduct an investigation to determine the effect of placing objects made with different materials in the path of a beam of light.
- 1 PS4-4- Use tools and materials to design and build a device that uses light or sound to solve the problem of communicating over a distance.
Solar System (Stars and Planets)
- 1-ESS1-2 -Make observations at different times of year to relate the amount of daylight to the time of year.
- 1-ESS1-1 -Use observations of the sun, moon, and stars to describe patterns that can be predicted.
